Part 1: Spot the Background (Scene-setting)
Use Past Continuous to describe what was happening in the background when the story starts. Example: People were dancing and the DJ was playing loud music.
Part 2: Quick Actions in a Story (Sequence)
Use Past Simple for completed actions in a sequence (one after another). Example: He opened the door, walked in and sat down.
Part 3: Interruptions (When + sudden event)
Background action in Past Continuous + interrupting action in Past Simple. Example: I was writing when my phone rang.
Part 4: Tricky Choices (State verbs & meaning)
Some verbs usually go in Past Simple (know, believe, understand). Others can change meaning.
