Past Simple vs. Past Continuous - Exercise 3

Advanced Grammar Practice • 4 Parts www.ejerciciosinglesonline.com
Part 1: Background + Sudden Event (While/When)
Use Past Continuous for the background action and Past Simple for the sudden event. Example: We were walking when it started to snow.
Part 2: Two Long Actions in Progress
If both actions were happening at the same time and both were “in progress”, use Past Continuous twice. Example: She was texting while I was driving.
Part 3: Questions (Time vs. Finished Action)
Ask about the action in progress at a specific time (Continuous) or about completed events (Simple).
Part 4: Real-Life Contexts (States, Storytelling, “Suddenly”)
Watch out for state verbs (believe, know, like), sequences in a story, and context markers (suddenly, at that moment).
