Algunos verbos describen estados o condiciones, no acciones. Por lo general, no se usan en tiempos continuos.
Incorrecto: I am knowing the answer.
Correcto: I know the answer.
Algunos verbos pueden ser de estado o de acción dependiendo del contexto:
HAVE (estado = poseer): She has a new car.
HAVE (acción = experimentar): She is having a great time.
THINK (estado = opinar): I think you are right.
THINK (acción = considerar): I am thinking about my future.
TASTE (estado = saber a): This soup tastes delicious.
TASTE (acción = probar): The chef is tasting the soup.
Lo usamos para hablar de acciones que son habituales, verdades universales, horarios y situaciones permanentes.
La estructura es muy sencilla. Solo hay que tener cuidado con la 3ª persona del singular (he, she, it) en las frases afirmativas.
(+) Afirmativo: Sujeto + verbo (+s/es/ies en 3ª p. sing.)
(-) Negativo: Sujeto + do/does not (don't/doesn't) + verbo
(?) Interrogativo: Do/Does + Sujeto + verbo?
La regla más importante del Presente Simple es recordar cómo cambian los verbos cuando el sujeto es he, she o it.
work → works | play → plays | read → reads
He works in an office.
go → goes | watch → watches | kiss → kisses | fix → fixes
She watches a movie every Friday.
study → studies | try → tries | cry → cries
The baby cries when it's hungry.
¡Ojo! Si el verbo termina en vocal + y, solo se añade -s (Regla General).
play → plays | enjoy → enjoys
have → has (He has a dog.)
be → is (She is a teacher.)
I get up at 7 AM every day. (Me levanto a las 7 AM todos los días.)
She always drinks coffee in the morning. (Ella siempre bebe café por la mañana.)
The Earth revolves around the Sun. (La Tierra gira alrededor del Sol.)
Water boils at 100 degrees Celsius. (El agua hierve a 100 grados Celsius.)
Our train leaves at 9:00. (Nuestro tren sale a las 9:00.)
The conference starts next Monday. (La conferencia empieza el próximo lunes.)
Lo usamos para describir acciones que están ocurriendo en el momento de hablar, situaciones temporales o planes futuros ya confirmados.
Se forma con el presente del verbo 'to be' (am, are, is) como auxiliar y el verbo principal en gerundio (terminación -ing).
(+) Afirmativo: Sujeto + am/are/is + verbo-ing
(-) Negativo: Sujeto + am/are/is + not + verbo-ing
(?) Interrogativo: Am/Are/Is + Sujeto + verbo-ing?
Please be quiet, the baby is sleeping. (Por favor, silencio, el bebé está durmiendo.)
I am writing an email at the moment. (Estoy escribiendo un email en este momento.)
She is living in London for six months. (Ella está viviendo en Londres durante seis meses.)
We are studying French this year. (Estamos estudiando francés este año.)
I am meeting my friends tonight. (He quedado con mis amigos esta noche.)
They are flying to Rome next week. (Vuelan a Roma la semana que viene.)
